Say Goodbye to Your Mouse and Call Me Tony Stark

By day I work as a New Media Specialist so I can see goodness written all over this! At home there may not be too many practical day-to-day applications but damn it looks like fun. Say hello to the Leap Motion. About the size of a flash drive and claiming to be 200 times more accurate than anything else on the market, this bad boy offers a whole new way to interact with your computer. Best part- It’s only $70US!!

Kiwi Photographer Brings Banksy’s Street Art to Life

New Zealand photographer Linda Radosinska had the genius idea to bring Banksy’s street art to life. The series is called “Exit Through the Thrift Shop”. Take a peek…

I’m a little surprised that this hadn’t been done before, so big ups to Linda for the concept! While I don’t think she’s quite pulled off all the shots, some of them are kinda nice. What do you guys think?
Visit Linda’s website to view the entire series and to watch for future updates!

Edit: Turns out this has been done before- you can see Nick Stern’s attempt at recreating Banksy’s art here. If you can point me to any other examples hit me in the comments below.

Premium NZ T-shirts, Hoodies and Crews

A few weeks ago I blogged about upping the game, I’ve always put an emphasis on comfortable, top quality garments and less emphasis on branding. But you might have noticed recently that we’ve quietly unveiled new branding across all our online platforms and we’re about to introduce this to our garments too. Ethcs premium NZ hoodies and t-shirts have arrived.

Well almost. I was hoping to be posting about our new premium NZ t-shirts and hoodies tonight but sadly they’re not quite ready yet. Anyone who reads this blog regularly will already know what’s coming but for those of you that are new here I’ll give you a sneak peak at what’s new and about to be released.

NZ T-shirt – Rise and Chime

If I was going to be a bird, I reckon I’d be a Tui. They’re crazy mofo’s that always look like they’re having fun and taking the piss.

Nearly every morning I wake up to the sweet sound of Tui’s singing in the trees around our house. That got me thinking… and just once in a while stuff happens when I think.

Pantone Tile ScarfLytro - Light Field CameraDusi x-mini - Portable SpeakerPillows by Sensitive Boyfriend

1. The Pantone scarf is filled with just about every colour you can think of. It matches EVERYTHING! Win. I think it would look uber chur with our womens zippa hoodie.

2. The future of photography? I don’t know but it’s certainly very cool! The quick explanation of the Lytro camera is that it allows you to focus your photos after you’ve taken them. Try it out on their website Hopefully all those crazy folks chasing Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster start carrying these cameras and then we might actually see some proof!

3. Mrs Ethcs loves tea! Me, not so much but I think this is pretty chur. Dusi is a stove-top kettle re-imagined. The concept is by young NZ designer Juliet Symes. Check out the explanation on her website, it’s genius. Unfortunately it’s not in production but if it was I’d totally get one for Mrs Ethcs!

4. Okay so the x-mini isn’t all that new but we recently bought one as a gift and I was reminded just how kick-ass they sound. Boom! These bad boys pack a real punch.

5. Him dreaming of her. Or her dreaming of him. Or him dreaming of him. Or her dreaming of her. Whatever way you roll this is a pretty cute idea by Sensitive Boyfriend.

That’s it for this week. If you’ve seen anything you reckon is worth a feature on ‘The Thusday Thrum’ let us know and we’ll see if it makes the cut.

What Would Tane Mahuta Say?

Tane Mahuta – Lord of the Forest, estimated to be around 1200 years old. If Tane could talk I wonder what it would say? A project by Bartholonäus Traubeck could tell us one day, well at least in musical form anyway. YEARS is an insanely cool project produced by Bartholonäus Traubeck that literally tells the life story of a tree in musical form.

A modified record player reads the tree just like a vinyl record and interprets the tree rings into a haunting composition. If you want to get technical it reads the rings by texture and the light and dark values in the trunk. The data is then interpreted as a musical scale and output as music.

With all that Tane Mahuta has seen what would its song have to say?

1. Boom! Handcrafted walnut bass enhanced earphones from Vers Audio. We love the combination of nature and tech and Vers Audio do it supremely well across their whole product catalogue. We also love that they have a conscience; for every tree used in the production of their sounds systems and cases they plant 100 trees in areas that need it the most.

2. We love to cook and we love parmesan cheese. So these parmesan cheese pencils are pretty chur with us. The “leads” contain three different flavors: truffle, pesto and chilli. Sharpener included.

3. Papaw ointment. Pretty much the best lip balm ever invented. Doubles for cuts/burns/dry skin etc.

4. As a kid Shane went camping for nearly every family holiday, so this brings back a few memories for him. The Box Clever Caravan from Ian Blackwell is a little slice of Kiwi culture. Check out the Box Clever Holden for the full trip down memory lane! Oh in case you didn’t get it, both these feature a pull out drawer to keep your treasures safe. Clever eh.

5. Little Printer. So cute and such a cool idea. Sync it with your smartphone and Little Printer will gather your subscriptions together to create a beautiful mini-newspaper. Check out the video here.

That’s it for this week. Seen anything cool on the internets lately? Let us know in the comments below.

Upping the Game

Okay I’ve been asked a combination of questions lately: When are new clothes going to be released? Why haven’t you released anything new lately? When are new clothes going to be released?

So here are some answers for you fine folks at home. New clothes are coming soon. I can’t really narrow it down much more than that but we are working towards a winter release. I can tell you that Bec and I have been workin’ hard trying to up the game and release a product that will take Ethcs to a new high. I’ve previously been guilty of succumbing to the pressure and throwing things together in haste. Well no more. Having taken the time to build our current website and slowly ‘get it right’ I’ve learned to take as long as humanly possible to get things right. We’re working on a new logo that we feel better suits the Ethcs brand and with that comes an upgrade to our threads. I know no one likes to wait, but trust me. This is worth waiting for.

Peas – Shane.

New Zealand Carved FramesInvisible ZincCoolest Printer Ever!Incase Camera BagAdidas Ransom Mens Shoes

1. Carved Polynesian frames from Perese Carved Frames with a choice between Rimu and Kauri. Aesthetically we love these frames but also love that each frame has meaning. Hope to see some of our own Canvas Prints in these one day.

2. Unlike Pharlap and pavlova, Invisible Zinc comes from Oz, but we won’t hold that against them! We love it because it doubles as both a sunscreen and a make-up – providing long lasting, tinted and pocket-sized relief from the dirty great hole in the ozone above you. You only need a tiny bit, which is more than I can say for that pavlova…

3. Without a doubt the coolest printer we’ve seen. Check out the video and we’re sure you’ll agree.

4. Sweet, sweet camera bag. It’s a shame the internal sleeve was designed for an iPad though, if you need a camera bag like this you probably don’t edit photos on an iPad.

5. Just want. Sweet Man kicks from Adidas.
